European companies face crisis threat

The majority of businesses across Europe are in no position to effectively deal with potential or imminent crises, according to the findings of research published recently by DLA Piper, the international law practice.

The survey among 250 decision makers in top European companies showed that basic crisis management strategies to prevent unnecessary losses such as rapid response procedures, emergency communications channels and media training are in place in less than 50% of companies.

“Companies across Europe will be severely disrupted at potential huge cost if a crisis occurs. No business can ever eliminate regulatory risk but have crisis management plans in place will help to ensure business survival”, DLA Piper warns.

Most marketers shun crisis containment

Consumer demand for security is top-of-mind among marketing professionals, but few have taken measures to secure corporate data or to inform customers of their efforts. The "Secure the Trust of Your Brand: How Security and IT Integrity Influence Corporate Brands" report released by the CMO Council looks at how marketers address security issues and prepare for crisis containment.

According to the study, corporate data breaches, identity theft, and Internet fraud concern a majority of online consumers; no matter the measures taken by corporations to prevent security breaches, only 29 percent of marketers say there is a crisis containment plan in place at their companies should data be leaked.

Terrorist risks heightened

There is an increased risk of terror attacks in the US, according to the latest Probabilistic US Terrorism Model from Risk Management Solutions (RMS). The report says that attacks are more likely from Al Qaeda and associated groups, which carried out a total of 332 terror attacks between July 2005 and July 2006.

Although the number of attacks was down, year on year, the number of fatalities was up - to an average of 13 per attack.

The reports warns of a "heightened risk from terrorist loss in the U.S. during 2007. Attack frequency is at the upper 90% confidence limit. Destructive attack modes with multiple synchronous attacks are likely. The chance of chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear (CBRN) attacks by Islamic militant groups is significant."
