Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a cutting edge form of psychotherapy
based on the modification of cognitions, assumptions, beliefs and behaviours,
with the aim of influencing disturbed emotions.
The approach grew out of behavioural modification, Cognitive Therapy and Rational
Emotive Behavioural Therapy, and has become widely used in the treatment of
various forms of neurosis and psychopathology, including mood and anxiety disorders.
The particular therapeutic techniques vary according to the client or issue
They commonly include:
- Keeping a diary of significant events and associated feelings
- Thoughts and behaviours
- Questioning and testing cognitions, assumptions, evaluations
and beliefs that might be unhelpful and unrealistic
- Gradually facing activities
which may have been avoided
- Trying out new ways of behaving and reacting
CBT has been found helpful in the treatment of:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Panic
- Agoraphobia and other phobias
- Social phobia
- Bulimia
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Schizophrenia
CBT is now recognised as one of the most effective treatments for conditions
where anxiety or depression is the main problem.
It is the most effective psychological
treatment for moderate and severe depression and it is as effective as antidepressants
for many types of depression.
Relaxation and distraction techniques are also commonly included. CBT is widely
accepted as an evidence and empirically based, cost-effective psychotherapy
for many disorders and psychological problems.
All docleaf therapists who practice this technique have a background in mental
health, are fully registered with the BACP, interviewed
and abide by the docleaf clinical code of practice.
